The SBDC

Performance Company / Competitive Team

We are a performance and competitive company that engages in community outreach and service, local performances, and a few competitions and/or conventions over the course of the season. Company membership is acquired through an audition that takes place annually in June. Our company members demonstrate dedication, motivation and an unwavering passion for dance. Dancers will be taught lessons that go far beyond the dance floor including responsibility, work ethic and respect. Our company dancers are a family of common minded youth with shared goals.

Company members, along with their families, make a commitment to the studio that should not be taken lightly. Dancers are required to take a minimum numbers of classes per week as specified in the Company Requirements handout. They will also have rehearsals most weekends and are expected to attend all community outreach events, performances, competitions, conventions and workshops. They will compete in 3-5 competitions a year and 1-2 conventions, all of which, for the most part, are out of town.

Company membership requires a year-long commitment and intense training. Though these commitments are relatively time-consuming, they are educational and intended for the benefit of your dancer and did I mention - they are FUN!!! In addition, the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie these dancers feel is truly incredible, and the amount of growth they will see from year to year is extensive. Being in a competitive program is the ultimate combination of technique and artistry.

Are you ready?! We invite you to Audition for the 2019-2020 Season.

The audition will take place on Saturday June 8th, 2019 from 9am to 12pm. The Summer Intensive June 3rd-7th leading up to the audition date is required for all dancers auditioning – those auditioning will be adjudicated over the course of the Summer Intensive Week.

Please bring the following with you to complete the registration process: $15 Audition fee (if it was not paid online in advance), Company Requirements Agreement (signed), Company Code of Conduct (signed), and the completed Casting Preference Sheet. Dresscode

Female dancers should wear their studio b blue leotard (current Studio B students and/or returning company members) or if you are new to our studio, a black leotard of any style. Pink or tan tights required, shorts or ballet skirt is optional. Hair in secure bun. Male dancers should wear black or white form fitting tanks or tees and black shorts or pants. All dancers should bring ballet shoes, pirouettes or tan jazz shoes, and tap shoes if you have previous tap experience. In addition, dancers should bring knee pads and snacks.

What To Expect at the Audition

The audition will begin with an hour and half long technique class during which the dancers’ skills and technique will be evaluated. Such skills include but are not limited to: pirouettes, turns in second, leg grabs, chin stands, knee drops and a variety of leaps. It is not simply that we are looking for mastery of a skill, but that the dancer shows a willingness and interest in improving their skill set by taking constructive criticism and putting it into action. From 10:30-11:15 we will review choreography learned at the intensive. Judges will be adjudicating the dancers on how well they retained the choreography from the intensive, but also how well they work with the teachers and other dancers in reviewing the choreography. From 11:15-12 dancers will perform the choreography in small groups for our judges. Judges will be looking at execution of the material, performance quality and showmanship, as well as improvisational skills. At 12pm dancers will be dismissed.

How each dancer performs throughout the week during the intensive and at the audition, will determine company membership, level placement, and casting for solos, duets, and trios. Judges will take into consideration behavior, work ethic, dedication, commitment and progress throughout the week for all dancers. In addition, Judges will take into consideration these qualities from the previous season when considering returning company members for the new season. Results will be posted no later than the end of the day on June 8th on Facebook, Instagram and our website. Casting results will be posted the following week.
